Sergeant-Major David Nathaniel Moore (Retired) was a man among men who left a lasting impression on his family, his church parish, his masonic connection and all those who were privileged to associate with this true, Southern gentleman.
Sergeant-Major Moore was born December 7, 1935 in Newport News, VA to the parentage of the late Rev. Fred Moore and Mrs. Lucille Watson Moore as the fifth of fourteen Children which blessed this union. He exchanged time for eternity surrounded by family and friends August 19, 2015 following a courageous battle with illness in the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Pineville, LA.
His family lived by precept and example of Christ's teachings. This nurturing home life became a natural steppingstone to his public confession of a belief in God, being baptized and uniting with the Macedonia Baptist Church of Newport News, VA. His Christian journey continued with his becoming an active, loyal and most serviceable member of the Asbury United Methodist Church of Natchitoches, LA where he participated in the Sanctuary Choir, served as the Church Treasurer, formerly appointed Lay Leader, Former President of the United Methodist Men organization, member of the Board of Trustees and unofficial chef and cake creator as well as the caretaker of various and sundry duties in and around the Asbury Church that are too numerous to mention. His physical absence will cast a long and far-reaching shadow in the Asbury family.
He was educated in the public school system of Newport News, VA and was such a man of foresight that he studied and earned a professional certification in the applied sciences areas of Air Conditioning and Small Appliances during his retirement from what was then the Natchitoches Area Trade School and is now the Natchitoches Vocational Technical College.
Brother Moore entered the United States Army where he represented the United States honorably and progressively moved toward becoming a career military gentleman in strategic installations around the globe. He retired with the esteemed rank of Sergeant Major and other commendations including National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Overseas Service Bars, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Ribbon and Overseas Service Ribbon marking a distinguished military career which spanned three decades of service to his country.
This likeable citizen was gifted indeed with true and meaningful love when he met and then married the former Delores Jones November 10, 1962. Their marriage vows were honored until death did them part and this beautiful couple enjoyed a genuine and time-honored matrimonial partnership for almost 53 years. Mr. and Mrs. Moore opened their home to family, friends, professional associates and sometimes, the lowly passerby. They seemingly built that proverbial house by the side of the road and became a friend to man.
Brother Moore's affiliations were honorable and meaningful organizations which brought help and uplift to his country and his community. They include membership with the VFW Post #1962 of Natchitoches, LA, Senior Warden with Dawn of Light Lodge #22 F & AM, 32nd Degree Mason Prince Hall Affiliation, Royal Arch Masons Haggai No. 6, Blue Lodge, The Shriners, Knights of Templar and O. J. Dunn Consistory No. 22.
Preceding him in death were his parents, four brothers: Fred D. Moore, Jr., Phillip A. Moore, Rev. Theodore A. Moore, and Clarence Moore as well as one sister, Gloria J. Moore.
His spirit will live on in those who cherished him most: his loving and devoted wife of fifty-two years, Mrs. Delores Jones Moore of Natchitoches, LA, three brothers: James Moore (Laurie) of Ft. Washington, MD, Sandy Moore (Fern) of Newport News, VA and Allen Tommy More of Newport News, VA; five sisters, Earlene Munden of Suffolk, VA, Buena Crawford (Oscar) of Chesapeake, VA, Gloria
Morgan (Alfred) of Alexandria, VA, Thelma Burton (Walter) of Alexandria, VA and Phyllis James of Burke, VA a large number of nieces and nephews, a sister-in-law, Ms. Eliza Jones, of Natchitoches, LA, four Godchildren, Sonya Snowden Turner (Michael) of Allen, TX, Denita Owens of Houston, TX, Bishop Keith L. Anderson of Dallas, TX, and Brittney Turner; his Asbury Church Family, his colleagues in fraternal and military organizations along with a host of other relatives and friends.
