Oneda's life was a sermon, her legacy, a blueprint. Though her voice is still, her
spirit speaks loudly: walk in purpose, speak with courage, serve with love, and
remember your roots. Born October 3, 1944, in Long Leaf, Louisiana, to
Alexander Jr. and Mae Ellerton Anderson Rogers, her family moved to Hardwood
Community, Oakdale, Louisiana, when she was young. She dedicated her life to
Christ early on at Mount Olive Baptist Church, under the leadership of Rev.
Hilliard Bradley.
Oneda attended Allen High School in Oakdale, LA. It was there that she met her
life partner. The day Mr. Paul Morgan walked into Oneda's classroom and
introduced himself as the new Biology Teacher, it was love at first sight. Oneda
leaned over to her friend and said, "I'm going to get him." She kept her word. On
August 30, 2025, Paul and Oneda celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
After high school, she studied at Grambling State University and Northwestern
State University, earning a degree in Business Administration. She was a devoted
wife, mother, grandmother, sister, friend, avid reader, traveler, photographer,
genealogist, and organizer of health fairs and family reunions with her husband.
She later joined First Baptist Church – Amulet, Natchitoches, LA, under the
leadership of the late Rev. H. B. Barnum, currently Rev. Thomas Carter, where she
held several positions over the years, including President of the Deaconess
Ministry, Superintendent of the Sunday School, Director of Vacation Bible School,
and President of the Missionary Society.
Oneda was a pioneer in every sense of the word. In the early 1970s, at a time when
office doors were often closed to women who looked like her, she became the first
African American to be hired into a front-office administrative role in the
personnel department, now known as human resources, at NSU. She carried herself
with quiet dignity and unwavering excellence — and though she never asked for a
spotlight, it often found her. However, Oneda's leadership didn't stop there. A
fierce advocate for justice and dignity in the workplace, she helped organize one of
the first employee unions at NSU — not for glory, but because she believed that
everyone, from the mailroom to the boardroom, deserved to be heard and treated
with respect. After 28 years of dedicated service at NSU, Oneda retired as NSU
Print Shop Office Manager.
Oneda wore many crowns — some visible, others spiritual. A faithful member of
the Rho Beta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, she
held numerous leadership roles over the years and mentored generations of young
women with the same wisdom and grace she poured into everything she did.
Years later, she would go on to make history as the first African American to serve
as President of the Natchitoches Historical and Genealogical Association, helping
others uncover and reclaim the stories of their ancestors. Other community
activities included serving as the Coordinator of the Women's Faith Organization
and participating in the Sheriff's SALT Council. In 2023, Oneda was inducted as a
Natchitoches Treasure, an honor given to retirees in Natchitoches who have made
significant and lasting contributions to the community.
Oneda was preceded in death by her son, Paul Morgan II, parents, sister, Annie
Bell Rogers Armstrong, brother, Joseph Rogers, and grandparents, Alexander and
Isabella Terrett Rogers, and David and Annie Young Anderson.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, Paul Sr., one daughter, Vernita A.
Morgan, daughter-in-law, Rejean Abraham Morgan, three grandchildren, Paul III,
Mariam, and Olivia Morgan, special nieces, Daphne Armstrong Richards (Jimmy),
Carolyn Ann Hall Berry, Ardenia Hall Davis (Andre'), Arlenia Hall Smith
(Luther), and Linda Dean Williams; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
