Myrtle Lealer Scott
Funeral for Myrtle Lealer Scott, 58, Shreveport, will be at 2 P.M. Saturday at Gaines Chapel AME Church in Natchitoches, with the Reverend Dr. Regina Robinson officiating.
Ms. Scott died Wednesday, March 7, 2012, in Shreveport.
Interment will be in the Breda Town Cemetery, Natchitoches, under the direction of the Winnfield Memorial Funeral Home.
She was born November 27, 1953, in Shreveport to Willie D. Scott, Sr. and Myrtle Lillian Scott. She accepted Christ and united with Gaines Chapel AME Church at aged six. She retired as a Registered Nurse from LSU Medical Center in Shreveport, and served over 20 years as a Medical, Surgical, and Telemetry Nurse, and as a Charge Nurse and Supervisor in the Telemetry Unit. She was recognized as Nurse of the Year in 1990 at the LSU Medical Center, and is listed in Who's Who in The Society of Nursing Professionals.
She received an Associates and Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the Northwestern State University and the LSU School of Nursing. As a student at Northwestern, she became a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. She is a 1971 graduate of Natchitoches Central High School, where she was active in GAA, Choir, and the Library Club.
Ms. Scott was a gifted musician and enjoyed singing and playing piano. She learned to play piano at aged 10, and as a teenager, began playing for several area churches and also teaching private lessons. She was among the first pianists to play for Natchitoches' Interdenominational Choir. Her notable favorite pastimes included traveling, sightseeing, and striking up a conversation with anyone willing to listen.
Survivors include: a stepmother, Lula B. Scott, Natchitoches; four brothers: COL(RET) Willie D. Scott, Jr. (Anita) Lawton, OK; Michael D. Scott and Cedric L. Scott, Natchitoches; and Fredrick Batiste (Jennifer) Wylie, TX; three sisters: Linda F. Scott, Shreveport; Joyce Ballet (Raymond) Moore, OK, and Charissa Y. Scott, Natchitoches; a faithful and loving aunt: Sara LaCaze (Rev. Lee) Natchitoches; four nephews; two great-nephews; five nieces; three great-nieces; one great-great niece; several cousins, and a dear best friend since aged five: Valeria Kelly.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Willie D. Scott, Sr. and Myrtle L. Scott; maternal grandparents, Reverend Adolphus Redden and Mary C. Redden; paternal grandparents, John B. Scott and Julia Pearl Ruben, and a treasured aunt, Mertis L. Redden.
