Obituary

Mary Gallien LaCour peacefully entered eternal rest on July 11, 2026, surrounded by her loving family at the Courtyard of Natchitoches. The beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend, reached the blessed age of 96.

Mary was born on October 8, 1929, in Isle Brevelle, Louisiana, to the late David Gallien and Leola LaCour Gallien. She was the cherished sister of Avis, James, Frances, and Shirley. She attended St. Joseph Elementary School, where she began building the strong foundation of faith and values that would guide her throughout her life.

On January 30, 1950, she was united in Holy Matrimony to George LaCour, Sr. From this loving union were born two children, Mary Theresa and George LaCour, Jr., affectionately known as “Butch.” In addition to raising their own children, Mary and George lovingly welcomed and raised their niece, Lara Ann “Lorraine,” embracing her wholeheartedly as their own daughter.

Mary took great pride in being a devoted homemaker, talented seamstress, loving wife, and, above all, a dedicated mother. She found great joy in preparing homemade meals, celebrating holidays, and creating a warm and welcoming home for family and friends. Her life was rooted in love, laughter, faith, and unwavering devotion to those she loved.

A faithful member of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Shreveport, Louisiana, Mary generously gave of her time through volunteer service and active participation in church ministries and events. She also enjoyed hosting the monthly gatherings of the Independent Social Club, where fellowship and friendship flourished.

In her spare time, Mary enjoyed taking walks through St. Vincent Mall, shopping at Dillard’s, and treating herself to lunch at Piccadilly. She loved dressing up for every occasion and was always impeccably put together, often with her signature jet-black hair, coordinating accessories, and elegant style.

Anyone who knew Mary knew she had a feisty spirit, quick wit, and a vocabulary that could keep you on your toes. She never minced words and wasn’t afraid to tell you exactly what she thought. Her honesty, humor, and authenticity became some of the many reasons she was so deeply loved.

One of Mary's greatest joys was sitting outside her home in her beloved Hollywood Heights neighborhood, where she greeted everyone who passed by. Whether she was sharing a story, catching up on the latest neighborhood news, or giving someone a good-natured piece of her mind, her yard was a place of laughter, conversation, and fellowship. She never met a stranger, and everyone who stopped by left with a smile, a story, or a little wisdom—whether they asked for it or not.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, David and Leola Gallien; her beloved husband, George LaCour, Sr.; her brothers, Joseph and James Gallien; her sister, Shirley Gallien; her son, George “Butch” LaCour, Jr.; and her daughter, Lorraine Williams.

She leaves to cherish her precious memory her devoted daughter, Mary Theresa Roque of Natchitoches, Louisiana; her beloved sister, Frances Metoyer of Shreveport, Louisiana; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives were forever enriched by her love. Though she will be deeply missed, Mary's love, laughter, and enduring faith will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
