Obituary

Marcus Wayne Hardwell Sr. was born September 9, 1973, to Leroy Hardwell and Betty Flowers Hardwell. He was the youngest of their five children together. He received most of his K-12 education in Winnfield -- from Westside Elementary School to Winnfield Senior High, where he graduated in 1992. As a youth, he attended Morning Star Baptist Church. He later began attending regular services at Greater Neal Temple Church of God in Christ. He was baptized after joining a church in South Carolina.

He was smart, athletic, creative and charismatic. In high school, he played basketball -- well enough to be offered a college scholarship but he chose to stay in Winnfield and build a life in the community he loved. He was known as Chico, the Barber. He started honing his craft as a barber as a youth, cutting the hair of his friends and classmates in a shop located at his family's home at 701 Patch Street. He eventually attended Alexandria Academy of Beauty Culture, Inc.

He had other creative outlets, including installing vehicle audio systems and building shelves and other artisan woodwork. He was naturally gifted having been introduced to carpentry by his father.

Marcus was a loving father to all his children. He encouraged them to pursue their education. He was a supportive son, brother and friend. As the town's barber, his place of business was often a friendly gathering spot, where he would share his hard-earned wisdom or offer a listening ear for his customers. He gave back to the community by offering free back-to-school haircuts for children, as well as to those who were simply in need. He used his clippers as an instrument to bring people together across any existing divides. In 2025, he was recognized as a community pillar. He had a kind heart, which he expressed in daily inspirational posts on social media, like the excerpt below:

"Nothing is more special than to show love and getting that same love in return. (I've) never been scared to tell someone that I love them because that's who I am. ... So show love world and get away from all the hatred, your life will be so much peaceful! God bless. Much love.”

Marcus peacefully went to sleep in the Lord on August 22, 2026. He will be lovingly remembered by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his father Leroy Hardwell, his mother Betty Flowers Hardwell and his sister Tina Marie Rivers.
