Obituary

A celebration of life for Mrs. Earlene "Maw Maw" Turner will be held at New Zion MBC of Winnfield on Saturday February 24, 2024 at 11am. A public viewing will be on Friday, February 23, 2024 from 6pm until 8pm at the New Zion MBC of Winnfield.  A burial will take place at the Winnfield Cemetery. Pastor G.Tomell Hamms will officiate.

Earlene Hamms "MawMaw" Turner was born April 15, 1943 to the late Harold L. Hamms & Lela Demery Mitchell in Natchitoches, LA. She transitioned from this earthly life on February 12, 2024 at the Winn Parish Medical Center in Winnfield, LA

She was preceded in death by her mother, father, husband, son Rev. Tommy G. Hamms, five sisters and four brothers.

Mrs. Earlene Turner was reared from a small child by her paternal grandmother, Pennie Dodson Wade. Although her mom named her Earlene. She was known by all as, "MawMaw".

Mrs. Earlene accepted Christ at an early age at the Morning Star Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend H.Y. Bell. She loved working in the church as a Deaconess and Choir Member, during her time there. Later, she moved her membership to the New Zion Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of the late Rev. Tommy G. Hamms, where she served faithfully until her transition. While at New Zion MBC, she served faithfully as a deacon, ministry of helps, and the New Zion Community Outreach Center.

Mrs. Turner attended Winn Training School. She was employed by Plum Creek/Riverwood Incorporation for 30+ years until her retirement.

Mrs. Earlene Turner united in Holy Matrimony to the late Peter Joe Turner on October 2, 1993 until his passing on June 17, 2020.

Mawmaw was a blessing to anyone she crossed paths with, her willingness to always share a conversation. She never met any stranger and was always willing to lend a helping hand. She loved her family, extended church family, and people in general. She was always smiling and always waving whether she knew the person or not.

Her presence will forever continue to live on, in our hearts forever….

She leaves to cherish her memories: three sons: Gerald Hamms and Charles Ray Williams, Sr. both of Winnfield, LA and Stacy Swafford (Letha) of Natchitoches, LA; one daughter, Min. Cynthia Tate (Bernard) of Winnfield, LA; Two sisters, Frances Warren of Houston, Texas, and Dorothy Mitchell of Natchitoches, LA; two brothers, Leotis Mitchell of Natchitoches, LA and Christopher Mitchell of Leesville, LA; 17 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, 14 great great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
