Obituary

Covid-19 restrictions will govern the visitation at the Winnfield Memorial Funeral Home, 117 MLK Drive, Winnfield, LA 71483 Saturday, June 12, 2021 from 9:30 a. m. to 10:30 a. m. and the following graveside service at the Union Hill Baptist Church Cemetery scheduled for 11:00 a. m.

Obituary

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved" (John 3:16-17 KJV).

Deacon Husher Calhoun, devoted and dedicated father, trusted friend and confidant departed his earthly home in Winnfield, Louisiana on June 2, 2021. He was born to the union of the late Isaac E. Calhoun and Jurllean Garner Calhoun on July 15, 1926 in Calvin, (Ward 8) Louisiana. Deacon Calhoun attended Union Hill Elementary School, and finished at the Winn Training School (Pinecrest High School) of Winn Parish.

Deacon Calhoun, was baptized at an early age in the Union Hill Baptist Church Community. Later, he united with the Mount Olive Baptist Church after moving from Grambling, Louisiana to the city of Winnfield. He married the late Inez Modest, February 6, 1949. With this union four children, Ethel M. Howell, (Robert), of Winnfield, LA, Audrey F. Calhoun, Winnfield, L.A. Rev. Dr. Barbara J. Calhoun-Gibson, (the late Joe Gibson) Harvey, LA, and Husher L. Calhoun, (Valerie), Shreveport LA, and an adoptive daughter Gwendolyn M. Carprue, (Bennie), Ruston, LA. This union was also blessed to be graced with 8 grandchildren, Jasquin Gibson, (Deanna), Phoenix, AZ, Nedra L.. Gibson Crittenden, (Mike), San Antonio, TX, Sedric Evans, Winnfield, LA, Tawana R. Calhoun-Beaudion, (Stephen), Shreveport, LA, Adrian Evans, (Holly), West Monroe, LA, Husher Trey Calhoun, (Janelle), Burleson, TX, Jeremy J. Gibson, Harvey, LA and Dr. Tara N. Calhoun, Cincinnati, OH, and three adoptive grand children. There are 20 great-grand-children, and 1 great-great grand-child.

Deacon Husher Calhoun, attended Winn Training School (Pinecrest High School), until he joined the United States Army. He entered the United States Army on July, 15, 1944. He was a proud veteran who fought in World War II, in the Pacific Theater. Upon completion of his tour of duty in the United States Army, he attended Grambling College where he received his GED and advance studies in Tailoring. He made his wedding suit and an evening dress for his beautiful wife. He worked as a security guard at Grambling College, a lineman, road construction worker, and green-chain operator and mill-wright at Olin Mathieson/Olin Kraft.

With a higher power calling, Deacon Husher Calhoun, became a candidate for the appointment of Deacon under the pastorship of the late Rev. B.J. Washington, who also ordained him a Deacon. He served many years as the Finance Office, until his health declined. He also, served for many as Sunday Superintendent and Church Trustee. He was a faithful servant of the Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church. "I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more" (1 Corinthian 9:19 KJV).

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, five brothers, three grandchildren, and one son-in-law. He leaves to cherish his memories two sisters, Elsie Calhoun-Jones, St. Rose, LA, Athlean Calhoun-Archey (Thomas), Shreveport, LA, and a host of nieces, nephews, god-children and other family and friends..
