Obituary

A celebration of life will take place on January 20, 2024 at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church of Winnfield, La at 11am. The will receive family and friends for a public viewing at 9am.

Annie Lucille Gary Hobdy was born August 26, 1933 to the late Hattie Walker Gary & John Gary in Caddo Parish. She passed from this earthly life on January 14, 2024 at the Autumn Leaves Nursing Home, surrounded by her family.

She was preceded in death by her mother, father, daughter, son, grandson, and great grandson.

Mrs. Annie Hobdy was an only child. Her father passed away when she was 3 months old. Later, her mother married Willis Pennywell, who raised her as his own and instantly she became a Pennywell. All of the Pennywell aunts and uncles loved and spoiled her as their niece. Although her mom named Annie. She was known to some as Annie Lucille, Lucy, Nanny, and Especially Mama Lucy.

Mrs. Annie accepted Christ at an early age at the Bethlehem Baptist Church of Atlanta, LA under the leadership of Reverend Howard Ellis. Now known as the New Bethlehem Baptist Church. She served loved working in the church as a Sunday School Teacher, Member of the Mission Board, & Deaconess. Later, she moved her membership to the Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church of Winnfield, LA under the leadership of Reverend Walter Williams.

Mrs. Hobdy was a graduate of the J.W. Gaines Negro High School of Montgomery, LA. She went on to further her education at Grambling College in Clerical Work. She also earned a degree in Bible Counseling from Rheme Bible School through Kenneth Hagin.

Mrs. Annie Hobdy was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Pondexter Hobdy, Sr. To this union they had 6 children.

Mrs. Annie Hobdy was a long time resident of Atlanta, LA. She was the 1st Black Notary Public in Winn Parish, the 1st Black Nurse's Assistant at Humana Hospital now known as Winn Parish Medical Center, the 1st Black Board Member of the Winn Historical Society, the 1stBlack Member of the Winn Parish Association for Retarded Citizens, the 1st Black Commissioner of Elections for the Village of Atlanta. Along with her Notary Public Duties, she was a certified Licensed Foster Parent, a member of the Civic & Political Affairs and the 1st Lady President of the NAACP of Winn Parish.

Mama Lucy loved sewing, crocheting, reading books, and writing. She was a people person who loved helping people in need. She loved talking, giving encouraging words, and talking about Jesus. Mrs. Hobdy moved to Autumn Leaves Nursing Home in 2003. She was Crowned Ms. Autumn Leaves in 2004. Mrs. Hobdy was good about going around in her mobility scooter, sharing with the residents and anyone she met.

She loved to talk about Jesus. As time went on her health changed, she would sit in her chair in the doorway of her room or on the hallway to greet and smile at everyone that came through. Mrs. Annie will be truly missed by her family, friends, and everyone that came in contact with her,

Mrs. Annie Hobdy leaves to cherish all those beautiful memories: 2 sons, Baby Jefferson Hobdy, Sr. (Gladys) of Winnfield, LA and Pondexter Hobdy, Jr. (Vickie) of Flint, MI; 2 daughters, Giradine Walker (Reverend William C.) & Deirdre Hobdy both of Atlanta, LA; 1 daughter in law, Judy Harris of Shreveport, LA; 1 aunt, Leona Walker Valentine of Los Angeles, CA; 17 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren, 2 God grandchildren, 1 God great granddaughter, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
